- DIED. Alan Wiggins, 32, fleet-foot outfielder and second
- baseman whose use of drugs cut short a promising career; of
- tuberculosis and other illnesses his family attributed to his
- substance-abuse problems; in Los Angeles. In his seven seasons
- with the San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles, Wiggins batted
- .259 and stole 242 bases. In 1984 his five stolen bases in a
- game tied the modern National League record. Wiggins underwent
- drug rehabilitation three times, and was suspended indefinitely
- in 1987.
